Aperçu du projet
The scientific objectives of EO4PEAT are to enhance the accuracy of peatland hydrological monitoring through innovative use of Earth observation data, and hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling, and to improve the process understanding of peatlands facing different types of human and climate disturbance, in support of climate change research and peatland conservation, restoration, and management.
EO4PEAT will collect new in situ data as ground truth for remote sensing over tropical peatlands, develop a new retrieval algorithm for monitoring the inundation fraction in tropical peat swamp forests, advance the hydrological and hydrodynamic modeling of peatland areas, develop data assimilation techniques combining Earth observation data and process modeling and attribute monitored changes in peatlands to climate change and human disturbance.
Research questions
- How can multi-sensor Earth Observation (EO) data be integrated to improve the estimation of hydrological conditions, particularly groundwater table depth, in tropical peatlands?
- To what extent can EO-informed modeling and data assimilation reduce biases in peatland hydrological models and improve predictions of peatland water dynamics?
- How do human disturbances and climate-driven changes alter the hydrological functioning of tropical peatlands, and how can EO data help quantify these impacts?
Résultats attendus
- New tools to monitor peatland hydrology
- Maps of disturbance of peatland hydrological conditions and controlling factors of disturbance
Synergies avec le CBSI
EO4PEAT contributes to CBSI by advancing the scientific understanding of Congo Basin peatlands, providing data and models for sustainable management, and building regional capacity to monitor and protect these vital carbon-rich ecosystems.
Alignment with CBSI Science and Capacity Plan
EO4PEAT fully aligns with the CBSI Science and Capacity Plan by advancing integrated understanding of Congo Basin hydrology and carbon dynamics, establishing new field and satellite observations for the Regional Observatory, and strengthening regional scientific capacity through a co-funded research position at UNIKIN and local data collection. It contributes both to CBSI’s science mission—understanding the Basin as a coupled climate–forest–water system—and its capacity mission—empowering Congo Basin scientists to lead that research.
